Yoga was hugely fundamental in my self-love journey. It allowed me to really open myself up and become more connected with the world. For those that think this already sounds like a load of mumbo-jumbo, I ask you to bare with me because I too thought the same before starting yoga.
Why did I start yoga?
Well to cut a long story short, I’ve always wanted to give it ago and it sounded like it would really help with relaxation. At the time, I was going through a lot of stress linked to my A-Level exams and I thought it would be a fab way or staying healthy and to relax my body. I was sceptical at first because I knew yoga could hold a lot of spiritual meanings and, personally at that time, I wasn’t into all that.
What did I learn?
In short: so much. I learnt that my body was capable of some beautiful things. The poses and movements were so graceful and powerful, I loved it. It gave me such an immense sense of pride whenever I conquered a move I’d been working on for weeks. Advancing in complexity was challenging but fulfilling. I was surprised; in just a short few weeks I could already feel the mental benefits as well as the physical ones.
How did I achieve self-love?
I learnt self-love through the seven chakras. It sounds cheesy I know. However, when you understand the meaning behind them and how they can help you, your perspective on life will change. By opening up my chakras through various yoga moves, I was able to open up my mind. I found I was more aware and more open to the world. The stresses that were weighing me down in everyday life didn’t seem so huge anymore. I was able to appreciate the smaller things and therefore not feel so low. Why should you do yoga for self-love?
You learn to love your body and appreciate all the incredible things it can do. You learn that there is so much more to the world than what you’re currently seeing. You can really experience and relax your body so you no longer sweat the smaller things. Yoga is about a body journey and the benefits to your mind and body are amazing. Since starting yoga over a year ago, my anxiety has decreased to an almost non-existant level, I feel more relaxed and I sleep better at night. Yoga was what I needed to fully embrace my body so give it a go and see if it works for you!
